Liberty Powers Past Howard, 3-0
With the win, Liberty moves to 4-1-1 overall. The Flames have posted four shutouts already this season, one shy of last year's mark of five shutouts. Howard drops to 2-5.
The first half of the contest was played in a steady rain. Despite the conditions, Liberty carried play throughout the half.
In the 10th minute, Amoo (R-So., F, Accra, Ghana) shook off two blue-clad Bison defenders and fired a rising shot, which Howard goalkeeper Victor Thomas had to punch over the crossbar to prevent an early Liberty score.
The homestanding Flames got on the scoreboard in the 25th minute. Midfielder Phillip Aseweh (So., Navrango, Ghana) stepped in front of a Bison clearing attempt and put Amoo one-on-one with Thomas with a pass past a defender. Amoo ran onto the ball and blast a shot off and over the Howard keeper for his sixth goal of the year and a 1-0 Liberty advantage.
The Flames quickly upped their lead with two goals during the opening minutes of the second half.
After midfielder Juan Nino (So., Katy, Texas) forced a save by Thomas with Liberty's first shot of the half in the 48th minute, midfielder Verville netted his first goal of the season off a nifty pass from Juan Guzman (Sr., MF, Charlotte, N.C.). Guzman jumped on a loose ball outside the 18-yard box and bent a pass around a defender and onto the foot of Verville, who finished into the lower right-hand corner for a 2-0 Flames edge at 53:59.
Less than five minutes later, Bullock (So., MF, Forest, Va.) scored his third goal of the season, burying a crossing pass from Amoo into net at 58:16.
From there, the Liberty defense took over, closing out a 3-0 victory.
The Flames outshot the Bison, 14-4, on the evening, and also held the advantage in the corner kicks, 7-4.
Andrew Madero (Jr., Tampa, Fla.) made one save in the contest in the Liberty net, recording his fourth shutout of the season. Thomas stopped seven shots on the night for Howard.
Liberty hosts the Winthrop Eagles, Friday night, in a Big South Conference match at Osborne Stadium. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
