Lady Flames Win Big South Preview

Dacia Bushman, Jennifer Klugh and Hailey Neal claimed three of the top five spots in Saturday's Big South Preview, leading Liberty to a women's team victory in the 5K event. On the men's side, Evans Kigen finished second overall while the Flames finished second behind VMI, in the meet hosted by High Point at Shady Oaks in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The Lady Flames finished first in the team standings with 43 points, putting them 12 points in front of VMI. Meanwhile, the Liberty men took second, as the Flames fell to VMI, 41-57.

Bushman took second place overall among the field of 57 women's runners, finishing with a time of 18:59, seven seconds behind the winner, Hannah Granger of VMI. Klugh came in third with a time of 19:02, while Neal took fifth in her Liberty debut, clocking a time of 19:36.

Lady Flames Denise Troyer, Betel Yosef and Rod'Esther Castor claimed the 16th, 17th and 18th slots, respectively. Troyer finished the race with a time of 19:58, closely followed by Yosef (20:03) and Castor (20:05).

Rounding out Liberty's top eight female finishers were Hannah Hunt, who finished 22nd with a time of 20:16, and Taylor Bowles, who clocked a time of 20:20, good for a 24th-place finish.

On the men's side, Kigen, competing in his first cross country event as a Flame, clocked a 25:38 time in the 8K, crossing the finish line second after former High Point runner Jesse Cherry, who ran the race unattached in 25:27.

Transfer David Ricksecker was the next Liberty runner to finish, clocking a time of 27:23 for 11th place. Redshirt freshman Isaac Wendland followed with a 13th-place finish in a time of 27:38, trailed by Jake Reed (15th place, 27:52) and Spencer Jackson (16th place, 27:53).

Also finishing in the top 30 for Liberty were Ryan Cox (22nd place, 28:16) and Andrew Rigler (27th place, 28:35).

The Flames and Lady Flames are back in action Oct. 3 in Greensboro, N.C., when they compete in the Hagan Stone Park Classic. The first race of the day is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.
