A penalty kick was the deciding factor in Sunday's women's soccer contest, with the Midshipmen of Navy winning a 1-0 decision over Liberty in Annapolis, Md.

Liberty was first to make a drive early in the first half, when Lauren Stell took a pass from Maria Owen for a scoring attempt in the third minute, but the shot was saved by Navy keeper Beth Reed.

Navy responded with a shot of its own by Fallon Puppolo at 6:02, but the attempt was saved by Liberty keeper Karen Blocker. Blocker made another save three minutes later, when Anastasia Abid tried to put one in.
Owen broke away in the 15th minute, bolting down the left side to get a shot off, but it was stopped by Reed.

The Midshipmen jumped on the board at 23:12 when Carissa Youker scored on a penalty kick after a foul was called on the Lady Flames.

Navy tried again three minutes later, when Jen Grijalva punched a free kick that was saved by Blocker.
Owen made another scoring attempt at 28:30, but it sailed wide on the right side of the goal.

After an illegal substitution was called on Liberty in the final minutes of the first half, Grijalva took a shot that was stopped by Blocker.

The two teams traded possession in the opening minutes of the second half. After Navy attempts by Christine Calderon and Brittany Fruin, Owen was able to take a shot at 52:29 that missed wide on the right side.

Silvia Betancourt then took two shots in less than a minute, with the first missing wide on the right side and the second being saved by Reed.

Owen made her fourth attempt of the contest in the 75th minute, but it was again stopped by Reed.

The Midshipmen tried to extend their lead with just under nine minutes remaining, when Stephanie Lomeli directed a header from close range that was caught by Blocker, keeping the score at 1-0.

Neither team was able to make an offensive surge in the final minutes, and Navy walked away with a 1-0 win.

Navy was led by Grijalva, who took six shots, and Youker, who scored the lone goal of the game. Goalkeeper Reed tallied four saves.

The Lady Flames were led by Owen with four shots, followed by Betancourt with two and Stell with one. Blocker recorded seven saves in the contest.
