Liberty Picked Fifth in Preseason Poll

The Liberty women's soccer team was chosen to finish fifth in the Big South Conference's annual preseason poll, as voted by the League's head coaches.

The Lady Flames also received one first-place vote and 56 total points. The 2008 Big South Champion Radford was picked to finish first, garnering three first-place votes and 86 points.

The Highlanders finished one point ahead of 2008 regular season champion Coastal Carolina, which also took three first-place votes and 85 points in the poll. The third team receiving three first-place votes, Charleston Southern, tallied 79 points and a third-place finish in the poll, while High Point took the No. 4 slot with 69 points.

After Liberty, Winthrop finished sixth in the poll with 55 points, while VMI gathered 42 points. UNC Asheville totaled 31 points for the eighth position, just ahead of Gardner-Webb with 27 points. Presbyterian finished 10th with 20 points to round out the 2009 poll.

The Big South coaches also voted Radford goalkeeper Lisa Lubke the league's Preseason Player of the Year.

The Lady Flames will host Montreat for an exhibition game on Aug. 22 at 7 p.m., and will officially open the season on Aug. 28 at Virginia. The game in Charlottesville, Va., is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
