Contests with five 2008 NCAA Tournament participants, including runner-up North Carolina and semifinalists Wake Forest, highlight the Liberty Flames schedule for the upcoming 2009 men's soccer campaign.

Besides visits to North Carolina and Wake Forest, eight-year Liberty head coach Jeff Alder's will also face 2008 NCAA participants Virginia, William and Mary and Winthrop.

The Flames will open their season on Aug. 22 against 2007 NCAA champion and 2008 NCAA semifinalist Wake Forest in Winston Salem, N.C., followed by a match at William and Mary on August 27.

Liberty will begin its home portion of its 2009 slate under the lights at the soon to be constructed Osborne Stadium on Sept. 1 against Concord at 7 p.m. The Flames will then host the Appalachian State Mountaineers at 6 p.m. on Sept. 7.

The Flames will participate in the first annual Sculley Memorial Tournament at VMI in Lexington, Sept. 11 and 13. Alder's squad will face Rider in the opening game of the tournament on the 11th and meet St. Francis (N.Y.) on the 13th.

Following their weekend in Lexington, Liberty will open its portion of 2009 Big South Conference play at home against Radford on Sept. 19. The contest begins a four-game homestand for the Flames, which will close out the September portion of the Liberty schedule. The remainder of the four-game set will have a visit by conference defending champion Winthrop to Liberty Soccer Field (Sept. 25) sandwiched between non-conference contests with Howard (Sept. 22) and Longwood (Sept. 29).

The Flames will take to the road with three away contests to open October. Liberty will travel to Conway, S.C., to face Coastal Carolina in a Big South match on Oct. 3, followed by a trip to North Carolina on Oct. 6 to square off with the Tar Heels. A week later (Oct. 13), Alder's team will travel to Virginia for its annual meeting with the Cavaliers.

Liberty will finish the season with six contests, three at home and three on the road. The Flames will host Presbyterian in a conference match-up on Oct. 16, followed by a Big South match at Gardner-Webb on Oct. 20. Southern Virginia will visit Lynchburg on Oct. 23, before returning to conference play on Oct. 27 with a contest at High Point.

The Flames will closed their home season Nov. 3 against Big South foe VMI and complete their 2009 regular season with a visit to against conference opponent UNC Asheville on Nov. 7.

Liberty will then look to capture the Big South title, Nov. 12-15, at the 2009 Big South Men's Soccer Championship at Vert Stadium on the campus of High Point University in High Point, N.C.
