Golf and Softball Honored for Sportsmanship
The honors mark the fourth and fifth sportsmanship honors for Liberty during the 2008-09 academic year. It was the first-ever award for softball, and the second consecutive win for the golf team. Liberty also earned sportsmanship honors in volleyball, women's cross country and women's soccer during the 2008-09 academic year.
The 2009 Liberty softball team reached the Big South Championship title game for the second consecutive year, while the golf squad captured second place in the 2009 Big South Championship. Big South Freshman Golfer of the Year Robert Karlsson later represented Liberty as an individual at the NCAA Tournament.
Gardner-Webb received the Big South's Team Sportsmanship Award in women's golf and women's tennis, while VMI was the winner in baseball and men's outdoor track & field. High Point was the women's outdoor track & field honoree, while Presbyterian claimed the award in men's tennis.
The team awards are voted on by Big South student-athletes and are awarded at the end of each season. Teams cannot vote for themselves, and each institution ranks and votes for its top three.
