For the first time in his career, Liberty wrestler Christian Smith has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 3 team, receiving second-team honors as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America, earlier today.

Smith (Sr., 133, Suffolk, Va.) has accumulated numerous academic accolades during his time with the Flames. Twice he has been selected to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Academic team, with his efforts in the classroom helping Liberty finish No. 3 nationally on the NWCA All-Academic wrestling team list last spring.

Smith has also been named to the Big South Presidential Honor Roll twice and to the VaSID (Virginia Sports Information Directors) All-Academic team in 2007.

A four-time national qualifier, Smith just recently completed his wrestling career at Liberty, capping off a successful three-year run with the Flames by capturing his first-ever win at the NCAA National Wrestling Championship.

Smith finished the 2008-09 season with a 25-16 overall record and a 14-5 mark in dual action. He helped the Flames finish the year with a 12-9-1 dual record and win their third-straight NCAA East Regional team title.

The 2009 VaSID second-team all-state selection finished his career with a 95-80 record on the mats, placing the grappler in Liberty's Silver Medal Club.
