NCAA Northeast Regional Tournament Central

The Liberty golf season continues for one player, freshman Robert Karlsson, as the Kalmar, Sweden native will represent the Flames in the NCAA Tournament as an individual. Karlsson will appear in the NCAA Northeast Regional, hosted by Columbia, at the Galloway National Golf Club, located in Galloway, N.J., roughly 120 miles from New York City and 10 miles from historic Atlantic City.

The Galloway National Golf Club championship course features a layout of 7,022-yard, par-71 configuration and is ranked among Golf Magazine's top 100 modern courses. The course features holes carved from the sandy soil, lined with majestic pine trees, and boarded by the natural beauty of Reeds Bay.

The three-day/54-hole event will commence with practice rounds on Wednesday. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 18 holes will be played, starting at 8:30 a.m. each day. Karlsson will tee off on hole No. 1 at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, and will be joined in his threesome by Sacred Heart's Leo Garcia and Columbia's Clark Granum.

Karlsson is one of five individuals participating in the event. Joining Karlsson are Eric Hawerchak of Central Connecticut St., Kevin O'Connell of North Carolina, Peter Williamson of Dartmouth and Dan Woltman of Wisconsin. There are a total of 14 teams also participating in the event, including Big South champion Coastal Carolina. Joining the Chanticleers in the field are Alabama, Clemson, Colorado State, Columbia, Illinois, Kent State, Minnesota, Penn State, Sacred Heart, Tennessee, VCU, Virginia and Wake Forest.

Karlsson marks the first Liberty individual to ever receive a bid to the NCAA Tournament, and serves as the only other Big South participant in a regional this year, outside of Big South Champion Coastal Carolina. Liberty, as a team, has made two prior trips to the NCAA Tournament (2003 & 2006), marking the only two times a Liberty Flames athletic team has received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The freshman standout has been ranked as high as No. 14 nationally by Golfstat (April 2) and No. 35 by Golfweek (April 2). Karlsson is currently ranked No. 159 in the country after a couple 28th-place finishes and a 12th place showing in the last three tournaments he appeared in, after traveling in consecutive weeks to tournament locations in California, Missouri, South Carolina and Virginia. Karlsson also garnered Big South Freshman Golfer of the Year honors and was named to the Big South all-conference team.
