No. 2 Liberty Falls in the Semifinals
With the win, Charleston Southern improves to 7-9 overall and will play No. 1 Winthrop tomorrow for the Big South Championship title. The Lady Flames end their season 15-7. Liberty's win total is the most ever in program history.
The Lady Flames earned the doubles point with wins in the No. 1 and the No. 2 doubles flights. Jordan Jenkins and Hannah Fick of Liberty earned the first doubles win of the day, defeating Angie Torres and Andrea Schutte, 8-3, in the No. 1 spot for their 12th victory of the year. Their win was followed by a win in the No. 2 contest by Stephanie Brown and Nadia Solomon-Burgess to capture the point. The Lady Flame pair downed Marija Dzakovic and Olga Makhova, 8-3.
Charleston Southern came back to secure the match victory with four wins in singles. The Bucs opened with 2009 Big South Player of the Year Makhova defeating 2008 Big South Player of the Year Jenkins, 6-4, 6-3. Schutte earned a win at No. 2 by topping Brown, 6-4, 6-1. No. 3 Brooke Pletcher won in three sets over Solomon-Burgess 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.
Valeriya Klintsevich took a straight set, 6-1, 6-0 win over Leonine Mankelkow at No. 6 for Liberty, stemming Charleston Southern from clinching the match.
However, Dzakovic topped Fick, 6-4, 7-5, in No. 4 singles to secure the victory for the Bucs. Entering the match, Fick had won 14 consecutive single contests.
