No. 5 Liberty Advances with Victory Over G-W
With the win, the Flames improve to 13-9 overall and move on to the semifinals, where they will play No. 1 seed Radford at 10 a.m., Friday. Liberty will be making its first-ever semifinal appearance in the Big South Men's Tennis Championship.
Liberty picked up the doubles point as Juan Reyes and Louis Steyn cruised to an 8-1 victory at No. 3, and the No. 1 team of Clay Cypert and Giancarlo Lemmi clinched the point with an 8-5 win.
In a tightly-contested match in singles, the doubles point proved to be the difference for the Flames. Gardner-Webb evened the match at 1-1 in the first solo match completed in the match. Evgeny Slesarev downed Cypert in straight sets in No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-1.
Liberty upped its advantage in the match to 3-1, with victories by Reyes and Simpson at No. 6 and No. 4 singles. Reyes tallied the first Flames win in singles on the morning with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over the Bulldog's Ryan Bernthal. Simpson took the No. 4 contest, 6-3, 6-1 over Carlos Quijano.
With Gardner-Webb leading in both the No. 2 and No. 5 singles contest, Liberty's Lemmi closed out the match at No. 3 with a 7-6 (5), 6-1 victory over Rafael Altmayer.
