Liberty Drops Contest at Radford
Liberty drops to 1-3 in Big South play and 11-8 overall. Radford moves to 5-0 in conference play and 15-3 overall. The Highlanders are ranked No. 57 in the nation and secured the league's regular-season title with the victory.
Radford opened up the match by taking two out of the three doubles matches. The nation's No. 48 ranked doubles team of Martin Sayer and Zack Watson defeated the Liberty pairing of Clay Cypert and Giancarlo Lemmi in a tightly contested No. 1 match, 8-6.
Ivan Salec and Mehdi Benhammou secured the double point for the Highlanders with an 8-0 win in No. 2 doubles over Chad Simpson and Juan Reyes. In another close match, the Flames combination of Gregorio Machado and Otavio Costa captured a 9-7 victory in No. 3 doubles over Igor Ogrizek and Stefan Bojic.
In singles, Radford continued its success. Sayer, ranked No. 90 in the nation, opened singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Cypert in No. 1 singles. Salec followed with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Simpson at the No. 2 spot. Benhammou wrapped up the match win for the Highlanders at No. 4 singles with a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Machado.
Liberty's Lemmi extended Bojic to three sets in a tightly-contest No. 3 match. Bojic took the first set, 6-1, before Lemmi won a tiebreaker to take the second set, 7-6 (7-5). Bojic then captured the third set, 10-4, to take the match.
Ogrizeck and Watson each claimed victories in No. 5 and No. 6 singles, winning by identical scores of 6-2, 6-3. Costa fell to Ogrizeck, while Reyes dropped his contest with Watson.
The Flames host Stony Brook, Tuesday. The doubles point gets underway at the E.C. Glass High School Tennis Courts at 2 p.m.
