Liberty Downs Averett
The Liberty Flames took control of their match with the Averett Cougars early, dropping only one contest en route to an 8-1 victory, Thursday afternoon.
The Flames, 7-3 on the year, took two out of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead in a match scored on a nine-point scoring system instead of the traditional seven. The Liberty pairing of Clay Cypert/Giancarlo Lemmi opened doubles play with an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles over Averett's Jusso Tapanainen/Dean Loock to run their season mark to 7-3. After dropping the No. 2 doubles contest, the Flames duo of Juan Reyes and Louis Steyn swept to an 8-0 victory in No. 3 doubles to give Liberty a 2-1 lead, heading to singles.
In singles, Liberty swept through all six contests for the 8-1 win. Flames Cypert, Chad Simpson, Lemmi, Gregario Machado and Reyes each won their singles contest in straight sets. Steyn was extended to three sets, before taking a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Loock in the No. 2 singles match-up. Steyn's win runs his record to 7-3 on the year. With Reyes win, he also moves his record to 7-3 on the season.
The Flames open Big South action at Winthrop, Saturday. Match time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
