Liberty Bucs Charleston Southern In Four
Liberty University picked up two quick wins and downed Charleston Southern, 3-1 (30-22, 30-16, 20-30, 30-27) this evening in Big South volleyball action in the Vines Center.
The Lady Flames (8-13, 4-4 Big South) got out to an early five point lead as an attack error by Katie O'Riordan put Liberty up 11-6. A Kendall Nichols (Fr., Hoover, Ala.) kill gave Liberty its largest lead of the game, nine, as they never looked back picking up the game one victory.
In the second game, Liberty opened up a quick 15-4 lead over Charleston Southern (10-13, 2-6 Big South) as Jessica Nelson (So., Tokyo, Japan) put down a kill from a Janell Migeot (Sr., Mission Viejo, Calif.) pass. The lead hovered around the 10-point mark for most of the game until the Lady Flames used a 5-1 run to pick up the victory, 30-16.
After picking up two easy victories, Liberty showed some complacency in the third game as they committed 13 errors and helped Charleston Southern get up 21-8. A Migeot error gave the Buccaneers their largest lead of the game, 23-9. The Lady Flames tried to get back in the game, but yet another error thwarted their rally as the Buccaneers cruised to a 30-20 win.
The fourth game proved to be the closet as Liberty and Charleston Southern battled to a 15 all tie midway through. Both teams would trade points as neither could take control of the game until a Nelson kill gave the Lady Flames a two point lead, 28-26. Liberty would go on to take two out of the next three points and pull out the victory.
Liberty was led by Lara Bartolomeo (So., Huntington Beach, Calif.) as she recorded 63 assists and seven digs. It marked the second time in three matches, and the third time this season, that she has posted 60 or more assists. Nelson and Nichols both tallied double-doubles with 20 kills, 14 digs and 17 kills 12 digs, respectively.
Rachel Denton (Jr., Burnet, Texas) posted the highest hitting percentage on the season for the Lady Flames as she hit .526 with 12 kills, while Migeot recorded 18 kills (14 in the first two games) while hitting .438.
The Buccaneers were paced by O'Riordan who tallied 33 assists. Erin Wicker was Charleston Southern's lone player to post double-digit kills as she collected 11. Callie Kovel had a match-high 17 digs, while Victoria Owens had 11 digs.
The Lady Flames will be back in action tomorrow as they host the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina at 2 p.m.
