Liberty Falls To Coastal Carolina
Coastal Carolina's volleyball team posted their eighth win of the season and fifth straight Big South Conference win Saturday after defeating Liberty University 3-0 (30-24, 32-30, 30-26).
CCU is now 10-6, 5-0 in the Big South Conference, while Liberty falls to 6-12, 2-3 in league play.
In the first game, Coastal led 8-0 until Liberty got on the board. CCU still led for the remainder of the game, but Liberty fought back to keep a close game for a final 30-24 score.
The second game was a tough fight for both teams; however Liberty shot out with the 8-4 lead when Coastal took over after a kill from Nakia Thompson. The Lady Chants continued to trail Liberty until a 20-22 score after a kill from Jensen-Spencer. The Flames and Lady Chants battled to a 30-30 tie, when CCU took over for the 32-30 win after a kill from Alicia Meyers.
In game three, CCU maintained a lead until a 18-18 tie broken by a double block from Liberty's Kendall Nichols and Autumn Poorman. The Flames then went to take the 24-20 lead until CCU's Kimble had a kill getting the Lady Chants back into the game. CCU finally wrapped up the third game with the 30-26 win.
"I thought the girls showed a lot of gumption in coming back several times today," stated assistant coach John Pierce. "We learned a lot about shot selection and at the end of the match we need to learn how to swing hard and swing away, but that's coming."
Leading the way for the Lady Chanticleers was Katherine Jensen-Spencer who tallied her ninth double-double of the season with 20 kills and 10 digs. Jensen-Spencer has now moved to CCU's fourth spot for All-Time leaders in kills with a total of 1,258 kills during her career at Coastal. Jennifer Hampton tallied 42 assists and 11 digs for the Lady Chants. Krista Kimble added 12 kills, while Kali Banghart tallied 21 digs in the victory.
Liberty was led by Jessica Nelson (So., Tokyo, Japan) who recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 16 digs. Kendall Nichols (Fr., Hoover, Ala.) also recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs towards the Lady Flames' effort. CCU had an overall hitting percentage of .282 while Liberty hit at .169.
The Lady Flames return home to the Vines Center to take on the Bulldogs of UNC Asheville at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 14.
