Liberty fell to the Eagles of Winthrop 3-0 (26-30, 20-30, 21-30) this afternoon in the Vines Center to conclude Parent's Weekend.

Neither of the teams could get an advantage at the beginning of the first game as an Autum Poorman (Jr., Mingoville, Pa.) kill brought the Lady Flames (5-11, 1-2 Big South) to within one (11-12). Winthrop (13-4, 3-0 Big South) extended its lead to a game-high four points at 27-23, which proved to be enough as they'd go on to win, 30-26.

The second game was also tight early on as a Lara Bartolomeo (So., Hunting Beach, Calif.) kill sliced the Eagles' lead to 12-11; however, Winthrop ripped off a 12-5 run to put the game away as the Eagles would cruise to a 30-20 victory.

Winthrop looked to close out the match in the third, but the Lady Flames fought hard to push it to another game as a Kendall Nichols (Fr., Hoover, Ala.) kill knotted things up at nine apiece. The Eagles went on a 9-4 run to give them some breathing room at, 18-13. That's all Winthrop would need as they took game three and the match, 30-21.

"We knew Winthrop would be tough," explained head coach Shane Pinder. "Our kids stayed in it, but we just couldn't sustain it against their athletes."

"Our team showed a lot of fight and determination, but what I was most impressed with is how they worked through a tough match and never gave up."

The Lady Flames were paced by Jessica Nelson (So., Tokyo, Japan+) who tallied 11 kills and nine digs. Nichols collected a match-high 13 digs, while Bartolomeo had 24 assists on the afternoon.

For Winthrop, Mary Hock recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 11 digs, while hitting .306. Tori Grafeman collected 14 kills and hit .324. Chandra Ginest tallied a match-high 47 assists.

Liberty returns to Big South action next weekend when they travel to Charleston Southern, S.C., to take on the Buccaneers of Charleston Southern at 7 p.m. in the CSU Fieldhouse.
