Liberty Falls; Nichols Named To All-Tournament Team
Liberty dropped its final match at the 2005 Fairfield Inn Jefferson Cup, 3-0 (30-16, 30-25, 34-32) to Appalachian State in Memorial Gymnasium.
The Mountaineers jumped out to a 24-9 lead and never looked back as they took the first game 30-16.
In the second game, Appalachian State got out to a 14-7 lead; however, Liberty battled back, getting to within two points on four separate occasions (14-16, 16-18, 23-25, 25-27), but the Mountaineers went on 3-0 run to take game two, 30-25.
Both teams battled it out in the third game as the scored was knotted up at 19. The Lady Flames were able to get the advantage at 27-26, but Appalachian State responded, tying things up at 30. Liberty and the Mountaineers exchanged the next four points until Appalachian State finally took the lead for good, taking game three, 32-34, and the match.
"Coming off of a tough match against Virginia and with the gym being so hot, we came out and were very sluggish against Appalachian State," stated head coach Shane Pinder. "In the first couple of games we, spotted them 10 points before we really got going. We just ran out of gas."
Liberty was paced Lara Bartolomeo (So., Huntington Beach, Calif.) as she dished out 24 assists and collected six digs. Jessica Nelson (So., Tokyo, Japan) had seven kills and six digs, while Janell Migeot (Sr., Mission Viejo, Calif.) tallied seven.
Kendall Nichols was honored for her efforts during the tournament as she was named to the all-tournament team.
Liberty will be back in action on Tuesday when they host James Madison at 7 p.m. in the Lady Flames' first home match of the year.
