Liberty Coach Chris Johnson talks with junior Chad Simpson

The Liberty Flames men's tennis team fell in its season opener against the Old Dominion Monarchs, 7-0, Saturday evening at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Courts.

The host Monarchs took the doubles point by taking two-of-three doubles matches. The Liberty No. 1 pairing of Clay Cypert and Giancarlo Lemmi defeated Old Dominion's Matt Fawcett and Krysztof Muzalewski in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (1). However, the Monarchs were able to win decisions in the No.2 and No. 3 doubles matches to take a 1-0 advantage.

In singles, Old Dominion was able to claim victories in all six matches. Liberty's Luis Steyn almost broke through for a win, falling in a tiebreaker 6-3, 2-6 (10-5) to Yakov Diskin in No. 2 singles. Lemmi also dropped the No. 4 singles contest to Muzalewski in a tiebreaker, 6-3, 4-6 (10-6).

Liberty returns home next Saturday to host Bluefield indoors at the Sports Racket. Match time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
