Lady Flames Fall in Season Opener
The Liberty Lady Flames tennis team saw its 11-match regular-season winning streak come to an end in a 7-0 setback to Old Dominion, Saturday evening at the Monarchs' Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center.
The Lady Flames entered the match having won 11 straight regular-season matches. Liberty closed the 2008 season with the streak, the longest in program history. The Lady Flames had not dropped a contest during the regular season since a 4-3 defeat at Charleston Southern on Feb. 23, 2008.
Host Old Dominion took an early 1-0 advantage in the match, claiming the doubles point by sweeping the three contests. In the most tightly-contested doubles match, Liberty newcomer Lais Souza and Fabiana Gouveia were edged in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (4) by Marijia Citic and Irina Dementieva at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, the host Monarchs continued their winning ways, capturing all six matches for a 7-0 victory.
Liberty takes a two-week break, before playing two matches during a weekend at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. The Lady Flames will meet James Madison on Jan. 30 at the resort. Match times are to be announced.
