Liberty fell to Albany 3-0 (30-20, 30-14, 30-22) in its first match of the 2005 Fairfield Inn Jefferson Cup Tournament this evening in Memorial Gymnasium.

In game one, the Lady Flames tied things up early at 3; however, the Great Danes reeled off a 22-7 run to go up 25-10 and put the first game out of reach as they would go on to win, 30-20.

Albany once again got out quickly on the Lady Flames as they opened up a 10-5 lead in the second game. The Great Danes went on a 15-5 run to give them a 25-10 lead as they would take game two, 30-14.

Liberty looked to take game three and push the match to a fourth game. The Lady Flames and Great Danes were tied up early at seven on a Kendall Nichols (Fr., Hoover, Ala.) kill. Albany would get a little breathing room with a 9-1 run to go up, 16-8. Liberty would get to within six at 21-15, but that's as close as they'd get as Albany would take game three 30-22 and the match, 3-0.

"Albany is a really good team, a really solid team that didn't make a lot of mistakes," remarked head coach Shane Pinder. "We didn't put enough pressure on them as they were able to run their offense freely. It was a combination of them being a good team and us not playing well"

The Lady Flames were led by Lara Bartolomeo (So., Huntington Beach, Calif.) as she dished out 24 assists and collected eight digs. Nichols led the team with 11 kills and recorded five digs.

Liberty will be back in action tomorrow when they take on Virginia at 1 p.m. and then the Mountaineers of Appalachian State at 5 p.m. to conclude the 2005 Fairfield Inn Jefferson Cup Tournament from Memorial Gymnasium.
