Liberty Falls to San Diego State to Open 2005
The Lady Flames opened up their 2005 campaign with a 3-0 loss (30-26, 30-15, 30-18) to San Diego State in their opening match at the Aztec Invitational, Friday morning at Peterson Gym.
Liberty played the Aztecs tough in game one as a block by Janell Migeot (Sr., Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Rachel Denton (Jr., Burnet, Texas) tied the game at 24 a piece; however, San Diego State scored six out of the next eight points, including a game-winning kill by Alicia Waller to give the Aztecs a one game lead.
Game two was not as close as the previous. After being tied early on at two a piece, San Diego State went on an 18-6 run, capped off by a Waller kill, to give them a comfortable lead at 20-8 en route to a 30-15 game two victory.
Down two games, the Lady Flames came out strong in game three as an ace by Autumn Poorman (Jr., Mingoville, Pa.) brought Liberty to within one point at 7-6, but that would be as close as they would get as the Aztecs went on a 13-4 run to secure game three and the overall victory.
"We passed the ball well and served well which kept them out of their offensive system in game one," commented head coach Shane Pinder. "But our youth showed up in the second and third game as we couldn't get into our system and we became very predictable."
For the game, Liberty was paced by Lara Bartolomeo (So., Huntington Beach, Calif.) who collected 19 assists and six digs. Jessica Nelson (Tokyo, Japan) had eight kills and six digs, while Poorman recorded a career-high five block assists. As a team, the Lady Flames posted 14 block assists.
"We controlled the net blocking wise," remarked Pinder. "I was please with the way we controlled the net against a big and physical San Diego State team."
The Lady Flames will be back in action later today when the take on the Bluejays of Creighton at 4:30 p.m. (PDT) in Aztec Invitational action from Peterson Gym.
