Liberty's Hannah Fick's runner-up finish in Flight D singles highlighted the Lady Flames' play against a strong field at the 15th Annual Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg, Va., capping the women's  tennis team's fall season this past weekend.

Fick (So., Hamilton, New Zealand) marched to the final of Flight D singles bracket with three consecutive victories.  The sophomore opened her run with a straight set, 6-0, 6-1 win over Tamara Sachs of East Carolina in Friday's opening round.  Saturday, Fick defeated Appalachian State's Amanda Cash, 6-3, 6-4 and later in the day won by default over Davidson's Lora Dushanova to move into the bracket's final.  In Sunday's final, she fell to Shannon Betts of Virginia Tech, 6-2, 6-4, to finish, as the Flight D singles runner-up.

Also in singles, sophomore Stephanie Brown (Niceville, Fla.) won her opening match in Flight B singles, defeating Adrianna Alvarez of Murray State, 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles, both Liberty squads in Flight B doubles bounced back from opening-round setbacks to reach the final of the consolation bracket.  After falling 8-5 to Virginia Tech's Yasmin Hamza and Courtney Rauscher in its opening match, the pairing of Brown and Fick defeated the Appalachian State combo of Cash and Heather Prior, 8-1.  The Lady Flames' duo then handed Sachs and Brooke Walter of East Carolina an 8-3 defeat to move into the consolation final.

Meanwhile, Ekaternia Kuznetsova  (Sr., Kraznogorsk, Russia) and Louisa Souza (Fr., Sao Carlos, Brazil) fell also fell in their opening match to Wofford's Sonia Anand and Haley Baird, 8-5, before beating Susan Ma and Kim Weltman of Albany, 8-6.  The Lady Flames' combo followed that win with an 8-2 victory over Murry State's Adriana Alvarez and Lyndsay Ottosen to move to the consolation final.

Since both teams were from Liberty, the consolation match was not played.  Instead, the paring of Brown and Fick took on Albany's Holly Smith and Charlotte Tatler, defeating the Great Dane team, 8-2. Kuznetsova and Souza squared off with the Radford pairing of Antonietta Iosue and Alexandra Spector, taking the match up, 8-2.

The Hokie Invitational concludes the 2008 fall schedule for the Lady Flames.  Liberty will open its spring season on Jan. 16 at Old Dominion.
