Liberty Flames' Carlos Cardona captured the Flight "C" singles competition at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Tennis Invitational this past weekend.

Cardona (Bogota, Columbia) won four-straight matches en route to capturing the Flight "C" title. The senior opened up his run by downing Roman Del Castillo of Norfolk State in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, Friday afternoon. Later on, Cardona battled through a three-set match with James Madison's Brian Rubenstein, before advancing, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

Saturday, Cardona defeated Othmane Garma of Howard in the semifinals, 6-4, 0-6, 7-5. He then went on to win the Flight "C" title by taking two-straight sets from Christopher Newport's John Mook, 6-1, 6-2, in the final.

"Carlos had an outstanding finish, "commented Liberty head coach Larry Hubbard after the tournament. "We have been working with Carlos to close out the big matches and he did that this past weekend by winning singles."

"We hope this will be his best season yet as he is a senior and will be called on to provide us with key victories at #5 or #6 singles this spring."

Besides the Flames, eleven other schools competed in the two-day event including Queens (N.Y.), North Carolina A&T, Radford, James Madison, Norfolk State, Howard, Christopher Newport, Washington College, Longwood, American and host Old Dominion.
