Women's And Men's Track Team In Second And Third After Second Day At Big South Outdoor Track Championships

After the first full day of competition, Liberty's women's track team stands in second, while the men's track squad is in third place at the 2006 New Balance Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships presented by UCS on Friday.

Coastal Carolina leads the women's side of the event with 121 points and enters the final day of competition with a 57 point lead over second place Liberty with 64 points. The men's side of the three-day championship is a bit closer with Radford leading with 75.5 points, while Coastal Carolina ranks second with 71 points and Liberty in third with 60.5 points.

Several different members of Liberty men's and women's teams competed on Friday in preliminary events with 17 different athletes qualifying for Saturday's finals.

In events that were completed on Friday, Liberty had two all-conference finishes in the 3000 meter steeplechase as Piper Newby finished third with a time of 11:10.48 in the women's event, while Drew Ponder finished second in the men's event with a time of 9:18.22.

Liberty also had three all-conference honorees in the decathlon and the heptathlon as Clarence Murray won the men's decathlon with 5,699 and fellow teammate Ben Handon finished third with 4,769 points, while Marie Williams finished third in the women's heptathlon with 4,434 points.

The 2006 New Balance Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships presented by UCS will conclude with a full slate of events scheduled for tomorrow at the Coastal Carolina Track and Field Complex.
