Frazee Voted BSC Preseason Player of the Year
For the third season in a row, Liberty senior guard/forward Megan Frazee has been named the Big South Conference Preseason Women's Basketball Player of the Year, it was announced at Tuesday's 2008-09 Basketball Tip-Off Media Luncheon, held at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Concord, N.C. The Lady Flames were also picked to repeat as Big South champions in the conference preseason poll, and senior Moriah Frazee joined her sister on the preseason all-conference roster.
Megan Frazee (Xenia, Ohio) is the reigning Big South Women's Basketball Player of the Year and was also named the 2007-08 Big South Women's Student-Athlete of the Year for all sports. She averaged a career-high and Big-South leading 18.6 ppg a season ago, but her two biggest points came with 0.3 seconds left in the Big South Championship title game versus Radford. Frazee's last-second game-winner lifted the Lady Flames to their 11th conference championship in the last 12 seasons and netted her Big South Championship MVP honors.
Also a second-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American last season, Frazee was one of eight players in the nation to average at least 18.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per outing. She also ranked No.10 nationally with a .878 free throw percentage.
Meanwhile, Moriah Frazee (Xenia, Ohio) enjoyed a breakthrough junior campaign, averaging career-high scoring (13.2 ppg) and rebounding (5.6 rpg) figures. She also led the Big South in field goal percentage (.581), on her way to a first-team All-Big South selection at season's end. Frazee was a two-time Big South Player of the Week and earned second-team VaSID All-State recognition.
The Frazee sisters were joined on the preseason all-conference roster by three other seniors. Like Megan Frazee, Winthrop senior forward Ashley Fann made the team for the third year in a row. Also voted to the squad by the conference's head coaches and media members were Charleston Southern senior guard Pamela Tolbert and Radford senior guard Johnette Walker.
Liberty returns three starters, including Megan and Moriah Frazee and eight total letterwinners from its 2007-08 team, which went 28-4 overall and captured the Big South regular-season and tournament titles. As a result, head coach Carey Green's Lady Flames were the overwhelming favorite in the preseason Big South poll. Liberty garnered 17 of the 19 first-place votes and earned 169 of a possible 171 points.
Finishing second in the voting was Winthrop, with one first-place vote and 143 points. High Point, the host of the 2009 Big South Women's Basketball Championship, came in third with 129 points. Radford rounded out the top four with 116 points and claimed the final first-place vote, after finishing as the Big South regular-season and tournament runner-up a season ago.
The next three teams were separated by just two points, with UNC Asheville edging Coastal Carolina and Gardner-Webb for the fifth spot, with 75 points. The Chanticleers and new Big South member Gardner-Webb shared sixth place, tallying 73 points apiece. Charleston Southern notched 55 points for eighth place, with Presbyterian's 22 points placing the Blue Hose in ninth. Presbyterian will be eligible for the Big South regular-season crown, but will not compete in the Big South Women's Basketball Championship.
Liberty will have its first official practice on Friday, and the Lady Flames are exactly one month away from tipping off the 2008-09 season. Liberty will welcome VCU to the Vines Center on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. for an opening-round Preseason WNIT clash. The Lady Flames' 16-game Big South schedule is set to begin Jan. 3, when Liberty hosts Gardner-Webb for the Bulldogs' first-ever Big South contest.
For the first time, High Point will host the entire Big South Women's Basketball Championship at the Millis Center. The tournament will be contested March 13-15, with the winner earning the Big South's automatic berth into the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship.
