#4 Liberty Falls To #5 Winthrop 2-1 In First Round Of 2005 Big South Men's Soccer Tournament
Winthrop's Dee Vydra and Daniel Revivo each scored a goal to lead the fifth-seeded Winthrop Eagles past No. 4 seed Liberty Flames, 2-1, in the first game of the 2005 Big South Men's Soccer Tournament Friday at Albion Millis Stadium on the campus of High Point University.
The Eagles took the early 1-0 during the 22nd minute as Dee Vydra scored on a header from Sean Weron off of an Oliver Denal corner kick.
After intermission, Winthrop's Daniel Revivo tacked on another goal in the 72nd minute on a one-on-one opportunity with the Flames' goalkeeper Kevin Mahan (Waterford, Mich.).
The Flames came close on two occasions to cut into the Eagle lead late in the match as a Kyle Cupid (So., MF, Edinburgh, Trinidad) shot hit off the post in the 78th minute, while in the 80th minute, an Adrian Bumbut shot hit off the inside of the right-hand post and bounced out.
Liberty's Jonathan Burklo (Sr., MF, Tampa, Fla.) netted the Flames' first goal in the 89th minute, but the clock ran out as Winthrop picked up the 2-1 win.
Winthrop held the Flames to just five shots on the afternoon. Liberty's Mahan notched three saves during the match, while the Eagles' Patrick Mitrovich did not record a save on the day.
Winthrop (11-7-1) will play the winner of No. 1 Birmingham-Southern/No. 8 UNC Asheville Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. in the semifinals.
Liberty ends the season at 6-8-2.
Liberty Coach Jeff Alder
"You have to congratulate Winthrop; they have a very good team. It just wasn't our day. With 12 minutes remaining, we had a shot hit off the post and with 10 minutes remaining, we had the goalkeeper beat but it hit off the inside of the post and bounced out, but that's soccer. I am really proud of how our guys competed today. It just didn't turn out to be our day."
Winthrop Coach Rich Posipanko
"I was surprised seeing as it's a Big South Tournament game that neither team had the intensity or effort as the first match we played in this season. Anytime we can beat Liberty, it's a good thing since they have won 16 of the 17 games they played in."
