Women's Track Team Excels On Second Day At 49er Classic

Event wins by Jaime Watson, Piper Newby and Kena Butts highlighted Liberty's track and field performances on the second day of the 49er Classic held at the Irvin Belk Track Complex on Saturday.

Watson claimed victory in the 800 meters with a time of 2:08.89, while Butts won the high jump by reaching a height of 1.70m (5'-07.00"). The Lady Flames took the top two spots in the women's 3000 steeplechase as Newby won the event with a time of 11:17.42, while fellow teammate Rebekah Wahlquist finished second with a time of 11:55.94.

The Lady Flames also had two third-place finishers as Arlene Zelinskas finished third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.27, while the women's 4x400 meter relay team finished third with a time of 3:48.01.

On the men's side, Ravanno Ferguson finished second in the 100 meters with a time of 10.59, while Drew Ponder finished third in the men's 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:53.89.

The men's and women's track and field teams return to action on April 1 when they host the Liberty Invitational & Multi-Event at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex.
