Junior Josh Edmonds and his Liberty men's cross country teammates are ranked No. 4 in the Southeast Region to start the season.

The Liberty men's and women's cross country teams are both listed in the top 10 of the preseason U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I Southeast Regional Rankings, as announced today. The Flames check in at No. 4, while the Lady Flames are ranked No. 9.

After winning the season-opening Virginia Tech Cross Country Relay on Sept. 5, head coach Brant Tolsma's men's team matched its highest regional ranking in program history, fourth. Liberty trails only a trio of 2007 national meet qualifiers—N.C. State, Virginia and William & Mary—in the first ranking of the season. The Flames sit one spot ahead of Louisville, a team which finished ninth at the 2007 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship. Liberty is the only Big South squad to appear in this week's rankings.

Meanwhile, the Lady Flames, who placed second at the Virginia Tech Cross Country Relay, sit in ninth place. Liberty is the highest-ranking Big South team in the initial regional rankings, as Coastal Carolina is listed No. 12. A trio of ACC squads—Duke, N.C. State and North Carolina—top the regional rankings.
The Flames and Lady Flames will return to action Saturday morning, with the first of two home meets this season, the Liberty Big South Preview. The men's 8K race will begin at 9:15 a.m., followed by the women's 5K race at 10 a.m. Both races will be contested at the Campus East intramural fields.
