Big South Recognizes Liberty XC Trio
Osborne (Bristol, Va.) and Ricksecker (Laurel, Del.) teamed up to win the women's relay race by 51 seconds over the runner-up pairing from host Virginia Tech, in 45:11. Ricksecker's two 3K splits clocked 11:25 and 11:08, adding up to 22:33 and making her the fastest women's runner of the day. Meanwhile, Osborne followed closely behind at 11:21 and 11:16 on her pair of legs, tying for the relay's second-fastest total time, 22:37.
For Osborne, it was her first career Big South Runner of the Week recognition. Meanwhile, Ricksecker has now been named Big South Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week two years in a row, following successful season-opening performances at Virginia Tech. The senior won the weekly award last year on Sept. 12, after placing second at the Virginia Tech Invitational.
On the men's side, Chelanga (Nairobi, Kenya) made a successful Liberty debut, teaming up with Mark Hopely (R-Fr., Carney's Point, N.J.) to win the men's relay race by a 15-second margin. Chelanga recorded the day's two fastest 4K splits, 11:29 and 11:31, adding up to 23:00 for his 8K of work. He took the baton for his second leg in third place, but was able to chase down the top two runners and cross the finish line first, with an overall time of 48:57.
Chelanga and Hopely's victory helped the Liberty men's squad win the four-team meet with a total of 12 points. The Flames outdistanced runner-up VCU by 10 markers.
Liberty will take this weekend off competition. The Flames and Lady Flames will return to action on Sept. 20, with the first of two home meets this season, the Liberty Big South Preview. The men's 8K race will begin at 9:15 a.m., followed by the women's 5K race at 10 a.m. Both races will be contested at the Campus East intramural fields.
