The defending Big South Conference Champion Liberty Flames men's soccer squad has been chosen to finish second in the Big South Conference's annual preseason poll, as voted on by the league's head men's soccer coaches. The Flames were edged out by one point by conference favorite Winthrop.

The panel also voted Winthrop senior forward Daniel Revivo the league's Preseason Player of the Year. Liberty senior midfielder Joshua Boateng (Sr., Accra, Ghana) finished second in the polling. Both the preseason poll and the Preseason Player of the Year selections were announced today by the Big South Conference office.

Liberty, which finished its 2007 season 13-5-2 and 5-1 in the Big South during 2007, received four first-place votes and 72 points overall in the voting, to rank second among the conference's nine teams. Last season, the Flames captured their first-ever Big South championship, garnering the program's first NCAA Tournament berth.

Head coach Jeff Alder's team will have 14 letterwinners and eight starters coming back from last season's squad. Senior midfielder Boateng, the 2007 Big South tournament MVP, has been named to the 2008 Hermann Trophy Watch List. He is the Flames' top returning scorer, having tallied 15 points on five goals and five assists in 2007. In addition, Liberty returns 2007 Big South Freshman of the Year and second-team all-conference goalkeeper Paul Gilbert (So., Rockvale, Tenn.), along with first-team all-conference performers Mike Gelatt (R-Sr., D, Indianapolis, Ind.) and Juan Guzman (Jr., MF, Charlotte, N.C.).

Winthrop was tabbed the conference favorite by one vote, collecting four first-place votes and 73 points. After the Flames in second, Coastal Carolina was picked to finish third, garnering one first-place vote and 66 points. Radford collected 50 points for fourth. High Point compiled 43 votes to round out the top five.

UNC Asheville received 34 points in being selected sixth. VMI (31), league newcomer Gardner-Webb (24) and Presbyterian (12) round out the poll. Contests against Presbyterian will count in the regular-season standings this year, but the Blue Hose are not eligible for the 2008 Big South Championship.

Revivo was selected as the Big South Preseason Player of Year, after receiving five first-place nods and 12 points from the panel. The Winthrop forward joins Boateng on the 2008 Hermann Trophy Watch List. Boateng received a first-place vote and seven points to place second in the preseason player voting.

The Flames open their 2008 season on Friday night at the Liberty Soccer Field by hosting the Bluefield Rams. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Big South Men's Soccer Championship is slated for Nov. 13-16 at CCU Soccer Field in Conway, S.C., on the campus of Coastal Carolina University.
