Boateng Named to Hermann Trophy Watch List
Boateng, a senior midfielder from Accra, Ghana, is one of 48 players who comprise the list. Last season, he was named the 2007 Big South Tournament MVP after leading Liberty to its first-ever Big South Championship. Boateng, a Big South all-conference second-team selection, finished ninth in the conference in points with 15 points on five goals and five assists in 2007. In addition, Boateng was named a member of both the College Soccer News National Team of the Week and the Soccer America Team of the Week for games played Nov. 12-18.
"I think this is a well-deserved honor for Joshua, based on his growth as a player and a person during the last few years," stated Liberty men's soccer head coach Jeff Alder. "I feel he has only scratched the surface on what he is able to do and look forward to seeing him build off of his performance last year in helping Liberty win the Big South championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament.
"The exciting thing for me is that Joshua is a team guy and does what is best for the group. He has embraced something bigger than himself and wants to help our program make a dent on a national level."
Considered the highest individual honor in intercollegiate soccer, the recipient of the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy is selected by Division I head coaches who are current members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). A list of 15 semifinalists is selected by a coaches committee in November, with three finalists announced in early December. The three finalists will be invited to the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo., for a news conference on Jan. 9, 2009, where the winner will be announced.
After fashioning a 13-5-2 record in 2007, Liberty captured its first Big South Championship and made its first appearance in the NCAA Men's College Cup. The Flames were ranked among the top teams in the NSCAA South Atlantic Region weekly poll the entire season.
The Flames open their 2008 season on Aug. 29 by hosting Bluefield at the Liberty Soccer Field. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
