Flames Finish 14th at N.C. State's Tournament
The Liberty men's golf team finished in 14th place out of 15 squads during the third and final round at the 54-hole Wolfpack Invitational, hosted by N.C. State, The three-day event was played at the 7,112-yard, par-72 River Landing Golf Club, in Wallace, N.C., over the weekend.
Liberty (907) entered the third and final round on Sunday in last place, but shot a 294 to finish just above Navy (910). Jay Calvo (220) led the way for Liberty, finishing the tournament at four-over par. Calvo shot a 69 on the first day and a 71 today, but it was an 80 on Saturday that dropped the junior for a tie in 30th for the tournament. Nathan Schenz-Davis (228) finished 12-over par, while Preston Dembowiak (229) concluded the tournament at 13-over par. Rounding out the Flames' squad were Sang Chun (231) and Parker McKoy (245), finishing the tournament at 15 and 29-over par respectively.
No. 16 Duke (851) shot a tournament-low 277 to handily win the tournament. Host and No. 35 N.C. State (860) finished second, while Memphis (864) shot an impressive 282 on Sunday to finish third.
No. 52 Michael Schachner (209) of Duke and No. 11 Webb Simpson (209) of Wake Forest tied for medalist honors, as there was no play-off to determine overall winner. No. 10 Jonas Blixt (211) of Florida State came from fourth place to tie for third with Kent Copeland (211) of North Carolina State.
Liberty returns to the links on April 20 for the Big South Men's Golf Championship. The tournament is a three day, 54-hole event hosted by Charleston Southern in Greenwood, S.C.
