Calvo Among Leaders After Day One
The Liberty men's golf team sits tied for 13th out of 15 squads after one round at N.C. State's Wolfpack Invitational, played at the 7,112-yard, par-72 River Landing Golf Club, in Wallace, N.C., on Friday.
Liberty (300) is tied for 13th with Rice, 16 strokes behind first-place No. 8 Florida State (284) and No. 16 Duke (284), through 18 holes. During the first day of competition, the Flames were led by Jay Calvo (69), who is tied for sixth at three-under, two strokes behind the leader Kevin O'Connell of North Carolina, the No. 14 golfer in the nation, and No. 11 Webb Simpson (67) of Wake Forest. Nathan Schenz-Davis (76) is four-over par, while Sang Chun (77) is five-over par. Preston Dembowiak (78) is six-over par and Parker McKoy (88) is 16-over after the first day.
Five of the 15 teams in the tournament are ranked in the top 35. Following Florida State and Duke at the top is Maryland (286) in third, while No. 18 Wake Forest (287) and No. 35 North Carolina (288) are in fourth and fifth respectively. The fifth ranked team, No. 24 North Carolina (297) is in ninth place, 13 strokes behind the leaders.
No. 10 Jonas Blixt (68) of Florida State, Clark Klassen (68) and No. 52 Michael Schachner (68) of Duke are tied for third, one stroke behind medalist leaders O'Connell and Simpson.
