Henderson BSC Men's Track Athlete of the Week
Henderson (Meadow, Texas) made a successful homecoming, recording personal bests in the hammer, discus and shot put at the prestigious meet. He also vaulted into the top five on the NCAA discus and shot put performance lists.
The senior opened the meet by throwing the hammer a personal-best 192-0 on April 3, netting him eighth place. The effort made Henderson the first NCAA thrower to exceed 190 feet in both the hammer and discus throws this season. The senior, who has now qualified for the NCAA East Regional Championships in three events (hammer, discus & shot put), sits No. 61 among the nation's hammer throwers.
Henderson's most impressive performance of the weekend came on April 4 in his best event, the discus. He resided in third place entering his sixth and final throw. Henderson then claimed the title in dramatic fashion, unleashing a Liberty and Big South-record toss of 204-3. The effort tops this week's NCAA national performance list and ranks him No. 10 in the world.
Henderson also made a late climb up the leaderboard in the shot put, contested April 5. He sat in the sixth position during his first shot put competition of the 2008 outdoor season, as he stepped up for his fifth throw. The senior's 61-3 heave won the event and established another Liberty and Big South standard. Henderson improved his outdoor shot put personal best by nearly six feet (he has thrown 61-10.5 indoors) in the process and now ranks No. 5 nationally.
The senior was honored with the Big South Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Week award for the second time this season. He was previously recognized during the indoor campaign, on Jan. 16.
This Saturday, the Flames and Lady Flames will tune up for next weekend's Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Liberty will travel across town for the Lynchburg Track & Field Classic, hosted by Lynchburg College.
