Liberty Falls to George Mason
Liberty falls to 11-10 on the season. George Mason improves to 10-12 on the year.
The homestanding Patriots jumped to an early 1-0 advantage during their first at bat. With one out, catcher Chris Henderson singled and later scored, when second baseman Ryan Soares dropped a two-out RBI single into right field.
After George Mason took its 1-0, each team was held off the scoreboard through the next three innings. Liberty threatened in second and fourth frames, but had runners thrown out at the plate in an attempt to score in each stanza.
The Patriots added to their lead in the fifth frame. Henderson led off the inning with a single and moved to second base on a walk to left fielder Scott Krieger. Justin Bour followed with a RBI single to give George Mason a 2-0 lead.
In the sixth, the Patriots broke open the game with six runs. After back-to-back, leadoff singles, the base runners moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. George Mason then scored its first run of the inning, when pinch runner Mark Hill beat the throw to home on a grounder to second by center fielder Spencer Wiggins. Henderson followed with a RBI single up the middle to make it, 4-0 Patriots. Two batters later, Justin Bour connected for a grand slam to up the home team's lead to 8-0.
George Mason added five more runs in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run home run by Bour.
Starter Steven Evans (Fr., LHP, Amherst, Va.) gave up two runs on seven hits over five frames to drop to 0-2 on the year for Liberty. Kris Mengle went the distance for George Mason to move to 1-2 on the season. The sophomore right-hander pitched nine scoreless frames, scattering six hits.
Liberty returns home on Friday night to begin Big South Conference play, by hosting nationally ranked Coastal Carolina in a three-game series. Friday contest will be a historic occasion in Worthington Stadium history, as the stadium will host its first-ever night game. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
