Flames In Fourth Place After First Day At Big South Golf Championship

The Flames fired a 14-over par 302 and are in a two-way tie for fourth place after the first day of competition at the 2006 PUPS/PDPS Big South Men's Golf Championship held at The Patriot Club on Monday.

Liberty is just five strokes behind first round leader Radford as the Highlanders carded a nine-over par 297 to lead the field of seven teams, while High Point is in second place with an 11-over par 299, followed by Coastal Carolina in third place with a 13-over par 301.

Individually, Charleston Southern junior Shawn Hall carded a one-under par 71 for the lowest round of the day, one stroke ahead of Radford teammates Aaron Summers and Chris Dillow, and Winthrop's Pete Alminas who all fired even par rounds of 72.

Liberty's Jay Calvo finished as the low Flame on the day with a one-over par 73 and is tied for fifth with High Point's Marc Issler.

Joining Calvo were Parker McKoy, who is tied for seventh after a two-over par 72, Albie Powers, who is tied for 18th after a five-over par 77, and Andrew Turner and Peter Horstman, who are both tied for 21st after a six-over par 78.

Second round action will begin Tuesday at 8 a.m. with Winthrop and Birmingham-Southern teeing off between 8:00-8:36 a.m. Charleston Southern and Liberty will tee from 8:45-9:21, while Radford, High Point and Coastal will begin play at 9:30 a.m. The final round is scheduled to conclude on Wednesday.
