Henderson, Leineweber Recognized by ECAC
Henderson (Meadow, Texas) had previously been named Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week on Wednesday, after posting strong marks on both days of the Virginia Tech Invitational. On Jan. 11, he finished third in the weight throw, adding almost a foot and a half to his personal best with a 62-1 heave. His distance was a qualifier for the IC4A Indoor Track & Field Championships in March.
Henderson saved his best work for Saturday, though, winning the shot put title by over four feet with a personal-best, school-record and Big South-record 61-10.5 toss. Liberty's first 60-foot shot putter, indoors or out, Henderson has provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships. He is listed second behind Manhattan's Milan Jotanovic on the NCAA national performance list and has the 10th-best shot put mark in the world during the current indoor season.
Leineweber (New Freedom, Pa.) was the only athlete to win two individual events at the Virginia Tech Invitational, taking first place in both the 400 and 500-meter dashes. Additionally, both of his winning times were IC4A qualifiers.
The Keystone State native opened his weekend by capturing the 500-meter dash in 1:04.57 on Jan. 11. The following day, Leineweber prevailed in the 400-meter dash, cruising to a 48.26 clocking. His effort put him atop the Big South performance list and boosted him to No. 5 on Liberty's all-time indoor 400-meter ledger.
The Liberty men's and women's indoor track & field teams will be off this weekend before hosting their second meet of the season, the On Track Open, Jan. 25-26. Action at the Tolsma Indoor Track Center will begin at 3 p.m. on Jan. 25, with the pentathlon 60-meter hurdles.
