Due to inclement weather, the second round of the William & Mary Invitational was cancelled on Tuesday, giving Liberty the tournament title as the Flames led after the completion of the first round played at the par 71, 6,871 yard River Course at the Kingsmill Resort and Golf Club.

Liberty bested the field of 22 teams as the Flames fired an eight-over par 292 on the opening day, good enough to claim a one stroke lead over Maryland (293) and a three-stroke lead over Villanova (295).

This marks the Flames' first tournament title of the spring season and Liberty's second of the 2005-06 season as Liberty claimed the title at the Frank Landrey Intercollegiate Invitational last October at the Poplar Grove Golf Course in Amherst, Va.

Individually, four players battled bluster course conditions on Monday to find red numbers as Loyola's Will Shriver, St. Bonaventure's Josh Anderson and William & Mary's Brent Paladino all carded rounds of two-under par 69, while Liberty's Andrew Turner finished in fourth place after a one-under par 70 to lead the field of 115 golfers. Anderson was awarded individual medalist honors based upon pre-tournament criteria.

Also helping the Flames to the tournament title were Peter Horstman, who tied for fifth after an even par round of 71, Jay Calvo, who tied for 30th after a four-over par 75, and Parker McKoy and Albie Powers, who both tied for 46th after a five-over par 76.

The Flames return to action this weekend when they travel to Westover, Md. to compete in the Drew Upton Memorial Tiger Golf Classic. The two-day 36-hole event is played at the Great Hope Golf Course and hosted by Towson.
