Liberty Head Volleyball Coach Shane Pinder has been named the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division State Coach of the Year. VaSID also recognized Lady Flames Kallie Corbin, Chelaine McCarty and Nicki Scripko with all-state accolades today.

Pinder, who guided Liberty to its first Big South Conference title and NCAA Tournament appearance since 2001, is the first Lady Flame volleyball coach ever to be named VaSID Coach of the Year. Meanwhile, Liberty placed a pair of players [Corbin (So., S, Beaverton, Ore.) and Scripko (Fr., RS/OH, Fayetteville, N.C.)] on the first-team all-state roster for the first time in program history. McCarty's (So., MB, Houston, Ala.) selection to the second team gives Liberty a trio of all-state honorees for the first time.

Pinder, who just completed his fourth season at Liberty, was previously recognized as Big South Coach of the Year. Under his direction, the Lady Flames notched a program Division I-record 27 victories, a 16-win improvement from the previous season. Liberty snapped Winthrop's 63-match Big South winning streak with a 3-0 sweep on Oct. 27 and ended the Eagles' five-year run of conference championships. The Lady Flames went on to win a game at the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history, dropping a 3-1 decision to Final Four qualifier California.

Corbin was voted VaSID State Rookie of the Year and was included on the second-team all-state roster a season ago. As a sophomore, she earned a number of awards on both the conference and national levels. A first-team All-Big South performer, Corbin captured Big South Tournament MVP distinction. The setter was named CVU.com National Player of the Week on Oct. 30 and was a three-time Big South Player of the Week. She paced the Big South and ranked No. 35 nationally with 12.70 assists per game. Her 1,625 assists were the most by a Lady Flame since 2002.

Scripko, one of two freshmen on the VaSID All-State first team, was recently recognized as an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-East Region honorable mention performer. The 2007 Big South Freshman of the Year, the right-side hitter from North Carolina was a first-team All-Big South player and won Big South Championship all-tournament recognition. Scripko won four-consecutive Big South Freshman of the Week awards during October, when the Lady Flames ran off 10-straight 3-0 sweeps. She finished second in the Big South in attack percentage (.343) and kills per game (4.26 kpg) in conference-only matches.

Corbin and Scripko are just the third and fourth VaSID All-State first-team selections in program history. Rachel Harnack made the first team in 2001 and Erin McKeown did so in 2002.

McCarty gives the Lady Flames a middle blocker on the VaSID All-State second team for the second-consecutive year, following Autum Black's selection in 2006. McCarty made an immediate impact at the net after transferring from Auburn, earning second-team All-Big South honors after ranking third in the conference with a .328 attack percentage. The Big South Player of the Week on Sept. 24, McCarty set a school rally-scoring record with her .684 attack percentage at UNC Asheville on Nov. 3.

Liberty and Virginia Tech both had three VaSID All-State selections, leading all Commonwealth Division I universities. Virginia senior outside hitter Sarah Kirkwood claimed the VaSID Player of the Year award, while Virginia Tech middle blocker Felicia Willoughby was voted VaSID Rookie of the Year by the Commonwealth's sports information directors.
