Liberty goalkeeper Paul Gilbert was named 2007 Big South Men's Soccer Freshman of the Year, Wednesday night.

Liberty goalkeeper Paul Gilbert was named Big South Men's Soccer Freshman of the Year and seven Flames were selected to All-Big South squads, the league announced this evening. The announcement was made at the conference's annual men's soccer awards banquet in Rock Hill, S.C., the site of this year's Big South Men's Soccer Championship.

Liberty forward Adrian Bumbut (Sr., Zalau, Romania), midfielder Juan Guzman (So., Charlotte, N.C.) and defender Michael Gelatt (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind.) each garnered first-team All-Big South selection. Gilbert (Rockvale, Tenn.) forward Joshua Boateng (Jr., Accra, Ghana), midfielder Daniel McGarry (Philadelphia, Pa.) and defender Douglas Nyame (Kumasi, Ghana) were named second-team All-Big South.

Gilbert becomes the third Liberty player to be tabbed the conference's men's soccer Freshman of the Year. Former Flames Kyle Cupid in 2004, and Darryl Roberts, in 2002, also were named the Big South Men's Soccer Freshman of the Year. Gilbert also received second-team All-Big South honors.

The goalkeeper has started every game of his first season in a Liberty soccer uniform. In 16 contests, Gilbert has posted a 10-4-2 mark with 1.11 goals-against-average and a .750 save percentage. The freshman keeper led the Big South with seven shutouts and combined on another, as the Flames posted eight shutouts in total during the year.

Bumbut receives his first all-conference first-team honor. The senior forward is tied for the Big South lead with 12 goals and 27 points this season. He also is tied for the conference lead in game-winning goals with five. Bumbut was named the Big South Player of the Week on Oct. 2, after netting a goal in a 3-0 victory at Radford and the game-winner in a 1-0 win over Winthrop the previous week.

Guzman joins Bumbut with his first Big South All-Conference first team mention. The midfielder has netted two goals and assisted on three others this season. Guzman netted the game-winning goal in a 3-0 win over Radford.

Rounding out the Flames' first-team members is Gelatt. The senior defender has been a key member of a Liberty defender corps which has yielded just 1.13 goals per game this season and has helped the Flames post a Big South-leading eight shutouts. Gelatt also was named to the Big South Men's Soccer All-Academic team.

Coastal Carolina forward Mkhokheli Dube was named the 2007 Big South Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Year. Dube received nine first-place votes and 19 points, finishing ahead of Liberty's Bumbut, who picked up 14 points and five top votes for Player of the Year honors.

Coastal Carolina Head Coach Shaun Docking was selected the league's Coach of the Year for the fifth time, a conference record. Docking edged the Flames' Jeff Alder by one point, 18-17.
