Gill Updates Media Following First Scrimmage
As the Flames begin their second week of training camp, Liberty Head Football Coach Turner Gill took time following practice today to recap the team's scrimmage on Saturday.
Gill praised his offensive unit, informing the media Liberty scored six touchdowns during the Saturday afternoon scrimmage, which was the Flames' first practice in full pads this August.
Two newcomers recorded four of Liberty's six touchdowns, as running back Kentory Matthews and wide receiver DJ Stubbs both scored twice with Matthews scoring on a 65-yard run. Gill also noted the strong play of offensive linemen Thomas Sargeant and Julio Lozano, who helped clear the paths for the pair of newcomers.
Despite the offensive outburst on Saturday, Gill did talk about the strong individual defensive performances of two players. Defensive lineman Gregg Storey recorded six "difficult production plays", while safety Corbin Jackson added several of the same type of plays in the backfield.
Liberty's special teams unit also converted on two of three field goal attempts, with the lone miss coming on a 51-yard field goal try into the wind.
For the second day in a row, the Flames battled some rain showers during the early part of their Tuesday morning practice; however, skies cleared midway through the workout. LibertyFlames.com will continue its position previews tomorrow when the website looks at Liberty's tight ends and fullbacks.
