U.S. Open Brings Liberty's 2016-17 Swimming & Diving Season to an End
Liberty senior Rachel Hoeve and sophomore Hannah Baker competed in the 50-meter freestyle on Sunday at the U.S. Open, held at Nassau County Aquatics Center in East Meadow, N.Y. Their participation brought Liberty's 2016-17 swimming & diving season to a close.
A native of Zeeland, Mich., Hoeve swam 26.57 to finish fourth in heat six. Hoeve's time was good for 36th among 79 entrants. Hailing from Fairfax, Va., Baker clocked 26.79, good for sixth in her heat and 50th overall.
Madison Kennedy, who entered as the top seed, earned victory with a time of 24.92 in the finals. Marie Wattel of France placed second in 25.06, while Rebeca Millard took bronze in 25.52.
The Lady Flames have wrapped up a successful 2016-17 season. Liberty placed second in the 2017 CCSA Swimming & Diving Championships before sending sophomore Alicia Finnigan to the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming & Diving Championships. Finnigan then made huge time drops in the 200-meter butterfly to tie for 10th at the 2017 Phillips 66 National Championships. This was the first time in program history that Liberty has competed in multiple USA Swimming national meets during the same summer.
