Liberty University wrestler Christian Smith has been named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic team, an honor bestowed upon the top student-athlete wrestlers in the country.

Last year, Smith was one of several Liberty grapplers to excel, posting an impressive 26-12 overall record, including an 8-3 mark in dual meets. The 125-pounder placed in four tournaments throughout the year, including individual weight class championships in three different events.

Smith culminated the year with an individual victory at the NCAA East Regional, earning one of four trips by Liberty wrestlers to the NCAA National Championship.

Defining the word student-athlete, Smith also shines in the classroom, having posted a 3.66 cumulative GPA through three years of college. Besides being named to the NWCA All-Academic team, the Suffolk, Va., native earned a spot on the Big South Presidential Honor Roll.

Smith will begin his final year of collegiate wrestling when he leads the Flames back to the mats this season, starting on Nov. 10 at the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Tournament in Brockport, N.Y.
