Several teams made a run at the Flames but none were able to overcome Liberty's sizeable first round lead and the team's late final round heroics as Liberty finished 10 strokes ahead of its nearest competitor to claim the first-ever title at the Frank Landrey Invitational, Tuesday afternoon, at the Poplar Grove Golf Course.

Liberty entered the final 18 holes of competition with a 12-stroke advantage; however, the lead quick dissipated as Maryland closed to within one stroke as the two teams made the turn. But the Flames got a five-under par performance by Peter Hong on the back nine, while Parker McKoy birdied the final three holes to help seal the Flames' first tournament victory of the year.

Liberty finished the 54-hole event with a 15-over-par 879 (289-291-299), while Maryland (304-288-297) and George Mason (300-296-293) finished tied for second with a 25-over-par 889. Towson finished fourth out of 10 teams as the Tigers carded the best round on the final day with an even-par 288 to finish the tournament at 36-over-par 900 (304-308-288).

For the second week in a row, George Mason's Mike Kirby was able to walk away with individual medalist honors as the senior was one of two players to finish the tournament under par with a two-under-par 214 (70-71-73), while Towson's Jeff Castle finished one shot back at one-under-par 215 (72-73-70), thanks to the best round on the final day with a two-under-par 70 on the par-72, 7,059 yard course.

Liberty placed three golfers in the top six as Hong finished with a career-best two-over-par 218 (73-73-72) for fourth place, while Andrew Turner finished in fifth with a three-over-par 219 (67-76-76), posting the best round of the event with a five-under-par 67 in Monday's opening round.

Nathan Schenz-Davis finished in sixth place with a four-over-par 220 (74-68-78), while McKoy finished in a tie for 29th place with a 17-over-par 235 (80-80-73) as the sophomore recovered from a pair of 80s on the opening day to finish with a one-over-par 73 on Tuesday. Raul Calvo rounded out Liberty's championship team as the freshman finished tied for 35th with a 19-over-par 235 (75-74-86).

A second set of Liberty golfers competed in the event as well with the "B" team finishing tied for fifth overall with a 42-over-par 906 (298-300-308). Sam Nelson led the second squad as he finished 10th with a seven-over-par 223 (75-74-74), followed by Albie Powers, who tied for 19th with a 12-over-par 228 (73-77-78), Michael Turner, who finished tied for 33rd with an 18-over-par 234 (73-80-81), Peter Horstman, who finished tied for 39th with a 20-over-par 236 (85-76-75) and Joshua Mast, who finished in 42nd place with a 23-over-par 239 (77-73-89).

The Flames will return to the links on October 24 and 25 as they travel to Concord, N.C., to participate in the 49er Classic for a two-day, 54-hole event hosted at the Cabarrus Country Club.
