Blue and Red Squads Split First Two Games of Liberty's Fall World Series
Senior David Giammaresi plated two runs with a two-out, 10th-inning single to push the Blue team past the Red team in game two of Liberty's Fall World Series,Wednesday afternoon, evening the five-game series at a game apiece. The Red team rallied with a four-run seventh inning Tuesday to capture game one, 5-4.
After the Blue squad built an 8-5 lead entering the bottom of the ninth inning of game two, senior shortstop Aaron Phillips (Claremore, Okla.) tied the game with a three-run home run to knot the contest at 8-8, and send the game to extra innings.
In the top of the 10th, the Blue team put together a two-out rally. Outfielder P.K. Keller (Sr., Clearwater, Fla.) ripped a two-out double to begin the uprising, and scored the deciding run on Giammaresi's (3B, Coral Springs, Fla.) game-winning hit.
Newcomer Joe Steinwedell (So., RHP, Encinatas, Calif.) picked up the win for the Blue. The right-hander allowed three runs on three hits in 2 2/3 innings of work. Grady Ihnat (So., LHP, Simi Valley, Calif.) recorded the last out in the 10th to earn a save.
In game two, the Red squad was paced by Phillips' home run and catcher Nate Thompson (So., Stoneville, N.C.), who went 3-for-5, with two RBI, a double, a home run and two runs scored.
Errol Hollinger (Jr., C, Upland, Calif.) went 3-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Blue team. Kenny Negron (Jr., 2B, Kingwood, Texas) and Tim Rotola (Jr., OF, Wichita, Kan.) added two hits each for the Blue squad.
On Tuesday, the Red team posted four runs in the seventh inning to erase a 4-1 deficit, and take the opening game of the series, 5-4.
In the bottom of the seventh, back-to-back, two-out singles by seniors Garrett Young (OF, Fountain Valley, Calif.) and Aaron Grijalva (INF, Redlands, Calif.) set the stage for freshman Jeff Jefferson (OF, Danville, Va.). The outfielder belted a walk-off single to cap the rally and lift the Red squad to the game one victory.
Junior Doug Wallace (LHP, Hurricane, W.Va.) pitched three innings of relief for the win. The left-hander allowed two earned runs on three hits. Red starter Clarence Nicely (Jr., RHP, Milton, W.Va.) allowed one earned run on two hits and struck out seven in four innings. Blue starter Dustin Umberger (Jr., RHP, Hummelstown, Pa.) tossed four scoreless frames, striking out five, before being lifted in the fifth inning.
The series resumes Friday with game three at 2:15 p.m. at Worthington Stadium. Liberty's Fall World Series will continue throughout the weekend with Saturday's contest beginning at Noon and Sunday's final game slated for 2:30 p.m.
