Liberty Rolls Past Southern Virginia, 9-0
Seven different Lady Flames scored goals, as Liberty defeated the Southern Virginia Knights, 9-0, Tuesday night in women's soccer action at Liberty Soccer Field.
The Lady Flames' goal total was the most by a Liberty team since Sept. 9, 2000, when the Lady Flames beat Youngstown State, 15-0, at Liberty Soccer Field.
With the win, Liberty halts a two-game losing skid and moves to 3-8 on the year. Southern Virginia drops to 5-8 on the season.
The Lady Flames struck for three quick markers in a 5:06-minute span, starting at the 8:30 mark. To open the offensive outburst, Brittney Bench (Sr., F, Orefield, Pa.) sent a crossing pass into the left side of the penalty area, which Suzanne Edwards (Sr., F, Waxhaw, N.C.) dropped into the center of the box for a waiting Amy Oberlin (Jr., MF, Ada, Mich.). Oberlin settled the pass and then beat the goalkeeper for Liberty's first goal of the contest and her third of the season.
Head coach James Price's squad scored its second goal of the burst at 12:18. On a corner kick, Edwards sent a header towards the net, which was cleared off the goal line by a defender. The clearing attempt was picked up by Bench, who rifled a shot inside the far post for her second marker of the year.
Just 1:18 later, Liberty made it, 3-0. Oberlin corralled a loose ball just outside the penalty area and tucked the ball into the left side of the net for her second tally of the game and fourth of the season.
Mallory Neff (Jr., MF, Sunbury, Pa.) upped the Lady Flame advantage with her first goal of the season, at 28:04. Forward Tanya Payne (Sr., F, Prescott, Ariz.) dropped a pass to the midfielder, who blasted the ball past the Knight's keeper for a 4-0 lead.
The Lady Flames went to intermission with a 5-0 edge, when Maria Owen (Fr., F, Mount Jackson, Va.) scored at 32:48. Alyssa Andersen (Fr., MF, Rochester Hills, Mich.) sent a crossing pass in into the penalty area from the left side of the field, connecting with classmate Owen. One-on-one with the keeper, the freshman put away the pass for her third goal of the season.
In the second half, Liberty built its lead to 9-0 with four more tallies in the first 15 minutes of the period. Kendall Bartholomew (Sr., F, Thaxton, Va.) scored three goals during the run, putting away a penalty kick for her first goal of the season in the 46th minute, netting her second in the 50th minute and adding Liberty's last goal of the contest in the 55th minute on a drop pass by Caitlyn Riley (Fr., F, Alexandria, Va.), off another cross by Andersen, who finished the contest with three assists.
Carly Miller (Jr., MF, Valley City, Ohio) netted the first goal of her collegiate career in the 49th minute of play also during the span.
Liberty outshot Southern Virginia, 36-3, in the game, and held the advantage in corner kicks, 2-0.
Lauren Kamphuis (So., Bloomington, Ill.) recorded her first collegiate shutout in the Lady Flames' net, making one save in the game. Andrea McClure recorded 11 saves for the Knights.
Liberty ends a five-game homestand Thursday night by hosting the Francis Marion Patriots in a non-conference contest. Game time at Liberty Soccer Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
