Liberty Baseball Releases 2008 Schedule
The Liberty Flames will begin their 2008 baseball campaign against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at the Clearwater Invitational, in a schedule released today by head coach Jim Toman.
Toman's Flames will open the season on Feb. 22 at the Clearwater Invitational against Notre Dame. Liberty will also face Albany (Feb. 23) and Iowa (Feb. 24) at the Clearwater, Fla., tournament.
After beginning the year with four road contests, the Flames will begin their home slate with a three-game series with Rider, on Feb. 29. Liberty is slated to play 28 home games at Worthington Stadium this season. Among the teams scheduled to visit Worthington this season are traditional intrastate rivals James Madison, Old Dominion, Virginia Tech, VCU and William & Mary, along with Big South defending champion Coastal Carolina.
Besides the Clearwater Invitational, the Flames will also travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., to participate in the Coca-Cola Classic. Liberty will face Cal St. Northridge on Mar. 14 and Mar. 15 during the two-day tournament, while squaring off with host Southern Miss., on Mar. 15.
In addition to the two tournaments, the Flames' road slate will also feature visits to ACC members Virginia and Virginia Tech. Liberty will visit Virginia's Davenport Stadium for the first time since 2004, on April 9. The Flames will make their annual visit to Virginia Tech's English Field later in the season, on May 7.
Liberty will once again play 21 Big South Conference contests. The conference schedule opens with a visit by defending champion Coastal Carolina (Mar. 28-30). The Flames will close their regular season and conference slate against High Point (May 16-18) at Worthington Stadium. In conference play, Toman's squad will host Coastal Carolina, VMI and High Point, while visiting UNC Asheville, Radford, Winthrop and Charleston Southern.
Liberty will host the 2007 Big South Baseball Championship, Mar. 20-24, at American Legion Post 325 Field at Dan Daniel Memorial Park in Danville, Va. The conference champion will receive the Big South's automatic bid to the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Regional play in the 2008 tournament is scheduled for May 30-June 2, at sites to be determined.
