Flames Midseason Review with Tom Clark
During the football team's off week leading up to its Big South opener on Oct. 20 against Charleston Southern, LibertyFlames.com will be visiting with each of the program's coordinators and head coach Danny Rocco. Today, we continue our midseason review as we spent time with defensive coordinator Tom Clark.
Clark begins the interview session by looking back at the first half of the season, giving the listeners a progress report on Liberty's defensive efforts. He follows with a discussion regarding different aspects where the defense has exceeded preseason expectations and then talks about areas the squad needs to improve heading into the conference season.
The second-year coordinator then starts to go in depth, breaking down each defensive position. Clark starts this part of the session by discussing the senior leadership of Steven Ackley and the play of up-and-coming players like Trey Jacobs, Brady Hassell and Soeren Wendlend on the defensive line.
Clark continues his position-by-position retrospective with a look at how Stevie Ray Lloyd is leading the linebackers, along with an unsung member of the linebacker core, Brandon Duke.
The defensive coordinator concludes his interview session by discussing newcomers Kent Hicks and Ryan Best in the defensive backfield and the solid play of safety Ryan Greiser.
Today's interview marks the second of four Flames Midseason Review audio sessions. Tomorrow, LibertyFlames.com will bring you a sit-down interview with Special Teams Coordinator Chad Wilt. Rocco follows on Sunday with his insight, as the head coach recaps the first half of the year and forecasts the Flames' future heading into Big South Conference play.
