Mallory Neff and Suzanne Edwards battle for loose ball Tuesday night against Longwood.

Longwood forward Alex Myers netted the lone goal of the contest, and the Lancers' defense held tight in 1-0 win over the Liberty Lady Flames, Tuesday night at Liberty Soccer Field.

With the setback, the Lady Flames drop to 2-7 on the season, while Lancers even their record at 5-5. The Longwood victory snaps a two-game win streak by Liberty.

Pressing on the offensive end early, the Lady Flames fired the first five shots in the opening 13 minutes of the contest. The last shot, off the foot of Tanya Payne (Sr., F, Prescott, Ariz.), was corralled by Lancer keeper Anne Whitmore to keep Liberty off the scoreboard.

At the 23:25 mark, Longwood midfielder Katie Young broke into the penalty area, one-on-one with Liberty goalkeeper Ashley Nyholt (Fr., Brampton, Ont.). The freshman goalkeeper blocked the shot by Young and was able to swat the ball away to prevent any further chances.

Several minutes later on a counter attack, Cassie Lynn fed Myers with a through ball into the right side of the penalty area. The Longwood forward found the lower near corner of the goal for her second goal of the season, at 39:05.

After intermission, Liberty continued to get shot opportunities, but could not break the Lancer net.
Lady Flame Amy Oberlin (Jr., MF, Ada, Mich.) may have had the best attempt in the second half on a shot in the penalty area, but it went wide in the 63rd minute of play.

Liberty had additional chances during the final stages of the match. A header by Suzanne Edwards (Sr., F, Waxhaw, N.C.) off a free kick popped over the crossbar in the 68th minute, and late in the match a shot by Brittney Bench (Sr., F, Orefield, Pa.) was tucked out of harm's way by Whitmore.

For the contest, the Lady Flames outshot the Lancers, 22-8. Liberty also held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

Nyholt made five saves in the Liberty goal, while Whitmore recorded seven stops for the shutout.

Liberty's Oberlin and Payne each had a match-high six shots. Kayla Huggins had three shots to pace the Lancers.

The Lady Flames continue their five-game homestand Saturday by hosting Winthrop in a Big South Conference match. Game time at Liberty Soccer Field is scheduled for 2 p.m.
