Liberty Sweeps Charleston Southern in Big South Home Opener
With the victory, Liberty is 11-7 overall and 3-1 in the conference. The Lady Flames now sit in third place, one-half game out of the Big South Conference top spot. Liberty has matched its 2006 season win total, with 15 regular-season contests remaining. Meanwhile, the visiting Lady Buccaneers drop to 8-10 overall and 1-2 in loop play.
Liberty set the tone by reeling off the first four points, including consecutive kills by Nicki Scripko (Fr., RS/OH, Fayetteville, N.C.), to open game one. The Lady Flames never relinquished control of the lead in the opening stanza, and Scripko continued to pepper the Lady Buccaneers with spikes. The freshman, who hit .600 in the first game, notched her seventh kill to finish off Liberty's 30-24 triumph.
The Lady Buccaneers took a pair of two-point leads, 3-1 and 6-4, during the opening stages of game two. Liberty responded with a 13-2 run, swinging the momentum firmly back into its favor. Karyl Bacon (Fr., OH/DS, Temecula, Calif.) and Chelaine McCarty (So., MB, Houston, Ala.) each provided a pair of kills during the surge. The Lady Flames went on to win, 30-19, paced by Bacon and McCarty. McCarty tallied six kills and Bacon had five during the middle game, which saw Liberty hit .341 as a unit.
As in game one, Liberty came out of the locker room on a roll in game three. Ashley Webber (Jr., MB, Lakeside, Calif.) had a hand in two blocks during a game-opening 6-0 burst. The Lady Flames did not slow down, closing out their victory with a 30-14 decision. Liberty hit .400 in the game, led by an outstanding all-around effort by setter Kallie Corbin (So., Beaverton, Ore.). Corbin totaled four kills, nine assists and seven digs during the match-clinching game.
On the evening, Bacon headed a trio of Lady Flames with 10 or more kills, finishing with 12 kills and nine digs. Bacon, recovering from injury, had her most kills in a match since racking up 13, Sept. 1 at VCU.
Joining Bacon in double figures were Scripko, who hit an even .400 with 11 kills and eight digs, and McCarty, who contributed 10 kills and three block assists.
Corbin closed the night with six kills, a match-high .462 attack percentage, 40 assists and 13 digs. Webber was involved in five of the Lady Flames' eight blocks, and Lara Bartolomeo (Sr., L/DS, Huntington Beach, Calif.) added a team-best 14 digs.
For visiting Charleston Southern, Amanda Hill and Renae Popovich evenly split 18 kills. Hill nearly had a double-double, as the freshman also came up with 13 digs, three shy of teammate Tricia Rodl's match-high total of 16 digs.
The Lady Flames will return to action tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m., when Big South co-leader Coastal Carolina visits the Vines Center. The Chanticleers are 11-8 overall and 3-0 in conference action.
