Men's Tennis Posts Solid Weekend

The Liberty men's tennis team had a successful weekend in singles at the Hampton Roads Invitational, hosted by Old Dominion, with four of its eight players advancing to the tournament's quarterfinals in singles.

The Flames opened the Friday-Sunday tournament in strong fashion in singles. Seven of the eight Liberty players took their opening-round matches to advance in their respective draws. The Flames went onto place four of their eight players in the quarterfinals of a strong field headed by Old Dominion, who finished last season ranked No. 30 in the country.

Sophomore Chad Simpson and newcomer Louis Steyn both went 2-1 in Flight A singles, to reach the quarterfinals. Lenardo Schujmann also posted a 2-1 mark on the weekend in singles, advancing to the quarterfinals of Flight B. Overall, Liberty went 9-8 in singles on the weekend.

On the doubles side, the pairing of Simpson and Steyn advanced to the quarterfinals of the Flight A doubles draw, winning their first two matches.

Liberty continues its fall schedule by traveling to Charlottesville, Va., this coming weekend for the Virginia State Collegiate Open, Friday-Sunday.
